Tour de France!!!

This one's for you Natasha!
This is not in order but this post was so important that I am not going in order!
Bastille Day in Chambery was the start of the 10th leg of the Tour de France.
Last night walking around town, there were so many people already and the parc (right next to my apartment was already taken over to set up for the bikers.
We met at 8:30 am to get over to the starting line, and we were right on the barrier (so the very front of the crowd). As soon as we got there the crowd started coming and we were smushed against the rail, very quickly. We stood there for four hours waiting for the race to start. I got a ton of free stuff, and then there was a parade of cars coming down, and then finally they started calling the names of the cyclists.
They lined up a little ways away from us and then after all of the names had been called they moved up to right in front of us, as in I literally accidentally touched a cyclist in the Tour de France. The funniest part of that scenario was that me and the two girls I was standing next to were so excited, we were singing and dancing to "Highway to Hell" which they were playing over the speakers, and the cyclists were looking over and laughing at us.
And then it was time for take-off, and they proceeded to pass by...And then I saw Lance! It was such a happy day in my life.
I don't know much about cycling but it was so exciting to be apart of it, and for it to come to where I live in France.

Yes that is Lance Armstrong!

The past week...

This past week I played Frisbee three times; every time with Mike Lui and Jeffrey, and with the addition of Jordan and Michael McMuffin some days. I haven’t gotten any better at it but I love to play! I did pick up the new skills of catching it one handed and throwing it side arm. It reminds me of playing with my dad and Makenzie when we were younger. When Jeffrey, Mike and I were playing on Monday in the park, a 12 year old boy played with us. He was a really sweet and he wasn’t half bad at the very American sport of Frisbee. After we played we met his parents and they were really nice too. We were supposed to play with him again but we never were at the park at the right time I guess.
On Wednesday, I went to a concert at the chateau with Danielle and it was really good. It had been so long since I had heard real music (like with an orchestra and band). It was a concert and a musical; the storyline involved a romance and magic, and that’s all I can really say because it was bizarre. It’s really cool because we’re here when it’s the anniversary of Savoie (the department of France) and Chambery is the capital of Savoie so a lot of cool stuff has been happening here (like concerts at the chateau).
Thursday, was the first time in a month I could eat sweets and my roomie woke me up with Pain au Chocolat, because she’s amazing! A bunch of us went out to get chocolate mousse and then ice cream. It was amazing!
After all of the dessert, we all went to the discothèque (pronounced disco-teck). I had never been to any sort of club in the states so I had no idea what to expect. It was all neon lights and smoke machines. It was a blast-apparently I love to dance. I just let loose and danced, and I didn’t feel creeped out by guys or the need to drink. I had a blast with my friends although it was the hardest thing in the world to go to class on Friday. But I did it!
Friday after school, I slept! at least for the most part. I also got to Skype with my sis Makenzie which was really nice.
Today, I went shopping with Dana! It was fun but not extremely successful. I bought two pairs of sandals (really cute and both under € 25). Also, I got some jewelry, but I was looking for some stuff and I didn’t find anything I liked. But no worries I have plenty of time to go shopping again :)
After shopping Dana and I made lunch and then headed for the pool. It seems that I sweat more in France than in the United States. We just relaxed in and out of the pool. More truth about France: Speedos and brief swimming trunks (they look like spandex shorts) for guys- mandatory and topless women-totally acceptable! Don’t worry I did not go topless.
And that has been my last week, or at least the interesting parts of it!

My Peeps

These are the people I have all of my adventures with!

There's Jeffrey of course! My travelling buddy also affectionately known as the one who drug (dragged) me to France.

This is Sam (to my left) and Chelsea (to my right). They were my saviors on the first night in Chambery, I knew where they lived and hung out with them.

This is the previously introduced Sam (on the left) and Michael- I call him Michael McMuffin because there are so many other Michaels on the trip and his last name is McMullen.

This is Jeffrey and Laura from New York-she's hilarious!

This is a long one but here it goes from left to right...
Anna (on the top) she has the amazing ability to make everyone feel comfortable around her.
Yvonne is adorable and always smiling-she's 25 but you wouldn't know it because she acts like an adorable little kid a lot of the time.
Danielle and Anna are best friends, and she's amazing- she has her head on her shoulders and loves to plan (which made Paris fun for everyone).
Mike Lui (down at the bottom) is from California (he goes to school in San Diego) and is my frisbee buddy (even though neither of us is good at it).
And there's Jeffrey...again.

Dana-oh words do not express...she loves to eat and she thinks she's a ninja :)

This is dear Hannah...she's pretty cool and she's from oregan which is sweet because I've alwayd wanted to go to the Northwest and now I have someone to visit there.

I've already introduced most of these people but...From left to right again there's
Michael McMuffin,, Hope (i'll talk about her in just a second), Anna, Lisa in the far back (she's amazing, she's been my mama while I've been here), Jeffrey Mike Lui, Liz (she's really sweet and lives just down the hall from me, Danielle and Jeremiah (I call him Jebediah because he continuosly calls me Hope). This picture was at the first France game during the World Cup.

This is Jordan the best roommate of all time...she can get anything open that I can't, when our power went out she figured out how to fix it...she's just amazing. And I call her Alice because I think she looks like one :)

This is Jenny, she's a blast to talk to and she's adorable and pregnant!

And last but most certainly not least...this is Hope. She's gorgeous as you can tell and she's my twin...I mentioned earlier that Jeremiah repeatedly calls me Hope, well thats because we're twins...obviously!

And those are the people that I have and will mention in my blogs!

A day on the life of...

I'm going to describe a pretty mudane day in my shoes here in Chambery.
Monday:
Woke up at 8:20am and left at 8:35 for the usual twenty minute hike uphill to school. Class at 9, breakfast during class :) Lunch after class ( yesterday was pretty special, we went to KFC). After lunch I went to the park to play frisbee with Jeff and Mike Lui ( he has to go by first and last name because there are three other Micheals in ou group) for 3 hours. For a lot of the time we had an audience: an old man in a wheelchair was watching and cheering us on. Towards the end a 12 year old boy came and played with us and we met his parents. After frisbee went and got some baguets for dinner, and then hung out with a bunch of people during dinner. After dinner Sam and I went for a shuffle (my version of jogging)...last night was killer we went for 40 minutes. And that is a mundane day in France.

A weekend in the life...

This weekend was pretty quiet and relaxing! Most of the people in our group went to marseille for the weekend, so there was only a few people left to hang out with. Butthe cool people who stayed in Chambery went to the lake on Saturday. The girls who were at the beach laid out and got some nice tanning time in. I do not have the patience to lay in the sun and feel my pale skin burning :) instead I played frisbee for 2 or 3 hours and got in the lake a couple of times..however boring this may seem to other people it was a great way to spend the day! After hours a the lake we went back and we made dinner, a mix of enchiladas and fajitas; it was delicious! Then we went to O'Cardinals to watch the US loose to Ghana. Me and Sam were leaving to go run after Ghana scored the second time and everyone in the pub started chanting USA to try and get us to stay. That was pretty much the highlight of my wonderful Saturday!
Sunday, I went to church, to lunch, and then to the pool. The pool is pretty nice and is only a block away from our dorm. But the men have to wear something tight to get into the pool like a speedo for example :/ a guy in our group had swim trunks on and couldn't get in the pool. After the pool we watched a movie "rock and rolla" with Gerard Butler. And the last thing I did before I went to bed was my homework. And those were the highlights of my fabulous weekend.

La verite de France

The truth about France...
Some observations:
The bread is as good as it is rumored to be
Most of the bathrooms are unisex
The women don't shave...they wax
The public transportation here is in fact amazing
They dont have plastic bags for free at the grocery stores ( it's to encourage you to buy reusable ones)
The milk is kept warm ( you can refrigerate it but you don't have to: I had to get used to that)
There are a lot of smokers but no smoking inside public places
No SUVs
There is no leash law, but the dogs are well behaved
There are scooters and motor scooters everywhere
The family ties are really strong

Paris!

Paris!
What a rush, trying to cram everything into 2 days! I've been to Paris before but it was jut as amzin to me the second. I've heard people talk about the rude people and dirty streets, and I still don't understand. Maybe it's different for the people who have studied French for so many years and finally seeing some of the focal points of study ( like the Eiffel Tower). The feeling I have when I see the Eiffel Tower, is like a huge goal in my life accomplished. And this time I could see the same feelings in everyone I was with too.
This trip to Paris included a couple of "firsts" for me. It was my first time riding the TGV ( which a super fast train), my first time staying in a hostel and my first time at the Musee d'Orsay.
The train was...fast, it was a three hour ride from Chambery to Paris. The hostel was much better then I imagined it would be. It was clean, I was in a room ( that locked) with 3 other girls that are in my summer program, there was a place to ge Internet and a bar with a tv ( to watch the world cup of course). The Musee d'Orsay was...Amazing! Last time I was in Paris I wanted to see it because it's a museum of impressionist art, and that's my favorite, but I didn't get to. It definitely lived up to my expectations! Monet is my favorite artist and they had a room full of his work, and I could of stayed there for hours. I was so overwhelmed by the beauty of it and the feeling that I was surrounded by a great artists work, I am not ashamed to say, I cried. Every time I think about what I'm actually doing ( studying and living in France) I can't help but thank God for how blessed I am.
Aside from the Musee d'Orsay, I saw the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, some of the Louvre, Sacre Coeur, and Notre Dame. Some notes on those experiences: I climbed to the second "floor" of the Eiffel Tower, which is about 25 flights of stairs. That was the first night we were in Paris and we got off the metro and I recognized where we were and I got extremely excited and ran around the corner of the building and there it was directly in front of me, and then I got to watch everyone I was with as they turned the corner and saw it also. That's a moment I would never take back.
My favorite sight in Paris is the Sacre Coeur, it was still as amazing this time as it was the first time. We went there first thing in the morning on sunday and there was no one there.
After Sacre Coeur, we went to this amazing church. It was held in a night club which was pretty funny to me, but Gods work can be done anywhere. And the church was amazing! They sang worship songs in both French and English and the message was about fear ( which is something I need to be reassured in).
The whole Paris experience was amazing!
